{"id":568829,"date":"2025-06-24T07:32:29","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T06:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibsintelligence.com\/?post_type=ibsi_news&#038;p=568829"},"modified":"2025-06-24T07:32:29","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T06:32:29","slug":"568829-2biometric-data-breaches-could-kick-off-a-global-banking-crisis-industry-expert-warns","status":"publish","type":"ibsi_news","link":"https:\/\/ibsintelligence.com\/ibsi-news\/568829-2biometric-data-breaches-could-kick-off-a-global-banking-crisis-industry-expert-warns\/","title":{"rendered":"Biometric\u00a0data\u00a0breaches could kick off a global banking crisis, Industry expert warns\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-535847 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ibsintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/91629-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ibsintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/91629-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ibsintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/91629-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ibsintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/91629-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ibsintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/91629-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ibsintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/91629-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/ibsintelligence.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/91629-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A successful and large-scale attack to expose a bank\u2019s customer\u00a0biometric\u00a0data\u00a0could kick off the next\u00a0financial crisis, according to cybersecurity veteran\u00a0Michael\u00a0Marcotte.<\/li>\n<li>Banks currently hold <a href=\"https:\/\/ibsintelligence.com\/ibsi-news\/biometric-technology-solutions-are-revolutionising-fintech-offerings\/\">biometric data<\/a> in centralised systems, making it highly vulnerable and attractive to hackers \u2013 and Marcotte believes a successful attack could result in group litigation on a large enough scale to destabilise a leading bank and the surrounding financial system.<\/li>\n<li>He is urging banks to decentralise the storage of customers&#8217;\u00a0biometric\u00a0data\u00a0\u2013 pushing it onto customers\u2019 devices and local clouds to remove this target on their backs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Michael\u00a0Marcotte, the founder,\u00a0chairman, and CEO of the enterprise-grade digital authentication firm\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artius.id\/\">artius.iD<\/a><\/strong>, was warned that a successful\u00a0biometric\u00a0data\u00a0breach at a leading bank could put the world on the brink of the next global\u00a0financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The intervention follows recent comments by the CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/ibsintelligence.com\/ibsi-news\/hsbc-hits-pause-on-zing-as-compliance-hurdles-stall-fintech-ambitions\/\">HSBC<\/a> UK, Ian Stuart, who last month told UK policymakers\u00a0the bank is \u201cbeing attacked all the time\u201d by online criminals, leading to cybersecurity becoming the bank&#8217;s biggest expense, amounting to hundreds of millions of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/may\/20\/hsbc-uk-ian-stuart-treasury-select-committee-banks-cybersecurity\"> pounds<\/a>.\u00a0This highlights the imminent danger banks are currently facing and the necessity for urgent action.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0Marcotte, who co-founded the US National Cybersecurity Centre and Chaired its Rapid Response Centre, believes the risk posed by banks\u2019\u00a0biometric\u00a0data\u00a0is being overlooked. Banks are currently storing this\u00a0data\u00a0in a centralised way, providing a single avenue through which hackers can expose vast volumes of\u00a0highly sensitive\u00a0data.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that a large-scale breach of this data could lead to group litigation from customers on a scale large enough to destabilise a bank and the wider financial ecosystem \u2013 and urged banks to decentralise this data by pushing it onto customers\u2019 devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael\u00a0Marcotte is, founder,\u00a0chairman, and CEO of\u00a0artius.iD, said:\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cBanks are spending hundreds of millions to bolster their cyber defences \u2013 everything from zero trust architecture to AI-driven\u00a0threat detection, and even quantum-resistant cryptography. But sometimes\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0far better, and vastly cheaper, to remove the need for protection in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reams of\u00a0biometric\u00a0data\u00a0banks that are being stored right now on centralised systems is a big red bullseye for hackers. It offers a single vector through which one successful attack could deal catastrophic damage. This is the biggest cyber threat banks face today \u2013 and yet bank executives and their regulators are\u00a0largely blind\u00a0to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe operational and reputational costs to a bank of a large-scale\u00a0biometric\u00a0data\u00a0hack would be enormous \u2013 but this would be nothing compared to the cost of the group litigation they could be hit with by the customers whose fingerprints and facial and vocal\u00a0data\u00a0are breached. If this were to happen at a JPMorgan or an HSBC, it would bring them to their knees, and the fallout for our entire global banking system could be apocalyptic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd yet the solution is simple. All\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0needed to de-risk this\u00a0data\u00a0is to decentralise its storage, pushing it onto customers\u2019 own devices where it belongs.
